The Broken Call

Rhona punched the numbers in absently, the keystrokes so far beyond memorized that they had become instinct. She tapped one well-manicured nail on the leather steering wheel, absently waiting for Sophie to pick up.

A large, dark truck barreled toward her Cherry Lexus and she honked, aware that she was likely over the line again, but simply not caring. After all, he had plenty of room on his side of the road. It wasn't like he couldn't have gotten over.

She saw deep set blue eyes as she passed, then a frown and the distinct flick of his finger. Yep, he was an asshole anyway, and didn't deserve her consideration.

"Hello?" Sophie answered, and Rhona stared into the phone. The line had a bit of static, and she hated static. she paid a premium for this damned service, and the least they could do was provide a clear call!

"Hey Sophie." Rhona replied, and heard the swift greeting from her long time socialite friend. "Have you heard from Davis? I thought we might stop by his place this afternoon..."

"Turner," a man's voice broke in, and Rhona frowned. "The bitch had better be dead by noon."

Rhona swiftly put her finger over the mic of the phone and reached over to turn the radio off. She didn't know if these people could hear her or not, but she wasn't taking any chances.

"She will be. I have her in my sights now." The deep, low growl of another man's voice crackled over the airwaves. Rhona slowed her Lexus and pulled over to the curb. Wave after wave of cars whizzed by as she listened to a conversation she was not supposed to hear.

"Someone needs to teach these high and might women that they shouldn't fuck with men like us." Rhona stuffed her fist in her mouth to keep any noise whatsoever from escaping.

"Yeah, well, today that someone is going to be me." The interior of the car grew dark as a shadow passed over. Rhona chilled and looked over to her window. The first thing she noticed was deep blue eyes and a cocky grin. The second was the barrel of a short, round weapon pointed straight at her. The third was a cell phone to his ear.

"See you in a few," the man mouthed, and Rhona heard the words loud and clear through her cell phone before the man snapped his shut and closed the connection.

"Wow, Rhona, did you ever hear anything as crazy as that?" Sophie's words rang in her ears.

The last she would ever hear.
